Aidan's First Pinewood Derby
I was surprised to see Darin at my house just before we left to the church go to weigh in for the derby cars. I can't say it enough just how thankful I am to Darin for helping so much in getting Aidan's derby car made. He has the tools and wood working knowledge that we just don't have. It's been fun visiting with him during the process and going to the store to get items for the car. Having school cancelations has helped with getting time to work on the car because he's had some work days canceled as well due to the weather. Jaime wasn't able to go to the derby today because of a funeral for Debbie, his Uncle Oscar's girlfriend. I would have been there but there's no way I could not take Aidan to his derby.
So we got to the church and Aidan's car weighed 5.08 ounces. It can't weigh more than 5 oz so Darin took out some of the putty weight. Worked really well. The heavy weight was inside the car. Darin drilled a hole in the back end for the putty weight to make it easy to add or take away some weight rather than gluing coins onto the car. His car looked nice and sleek. No noticeable added weights.
Racing! Aidan was so good the entire day. He kept saying through the entire building process that he didn't care if he won or not. He was such a good sport. I secretly prayed that he wouldn't come in last in all of his races. But I was pleasantly surprised that he didn't. He got 1st in some runs, 2nd, and 4th. He smiled with each race. Giving me thumbs up or holding up the number of fingers for where he placed.
In the end he came in 4th! For a kid who wasn't planning on winning he got quite the reward.
Being 4th place puts him as the alternate if one of the top three can't go to districts.
His car was award the "Flame Thrower" award. He had to have flames :) Green is his favorite color. When we saw these flame decals we knew they'd look good with the green.
Congratulations Aidan! It was a fun derby.
