Tyler's Sugery

Tyler's snoring has gotten a lot worse this past year and I've noticed that he struggles waking up in the morning, his bed, is a complete mess in the morning, and he's tired often. I took him to the doctor to have him checked out. I knew that his tonsils were large just from looking at them and I wondered if that had anything to do with his snoring. Doctor agreed that they were large and said that his adenoids were probably large as well. Which would explain why Tyler always sounds congested! Tyler gets colds often, and it's guaranteed he will get a cold whenever a new school year starts. Just being among his peers again always gives him a cold. I learned that enlarged tonsils and adenoids can make you susceptible to respiratory infections! Colds! So Tyler was referred to an ENT.
After seeing the ENT he had no doubt Tyler needed to have the procedure.

Tyler had his tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy yesterday morning. He struggled with letting the nurse give him an IV and she couldn't find a vein large enough and rather than poke him a second, time they said they would put the IV in after he was asleep. Tyler was more than ok with that.

The surgery was quick. About 20 minutes from when they wheeled Tyler into the operating room until the doctor came out to tell me how it went. The first thing he said when coming out was, "Those tonsils were biiIIIiig! No wonder they were giving him problems."

Tyler was so cute waking up after surgery. He wanted that IV out fast but he had to leave it in for another hour so they could give him fluids and still monitor him as he becomes more awake. He was groggy and kept moving around like he had somewhere he needed to be. He said he just wanted to go home. He had some applesauce and a popsicle. He was hungry having not been able to eat all morning before surgery. We were at the surgery center for a total of 3 hours but the time went fast.

After getting home Tyler took to relaxing on the couch with no problem. He was more than happy to play video games and watch TV. We've stayed on top of giving him medication every three hours and even waking him up in the night to make sure he drinks water to keep the throat moist and take more medicine. That way he won't be in too much pain. He's hardly eaten anything because he doesn't like how it feels when he swallows food. He's tried ice cream, sherbet, applesauce, jello, pudding and none of it has he asked to have more of and what he has been given he doesn't even finish. He has no problem swallowing water or Gatorade. That's most important right now, the nurse said. Drink lots of fluids. He should be able to feel better having soft foods in a couple days I hope. He will be losing some weight for sure if he keeps going the way he is.

When he takes a deep breath through his nose it sounds so clear and not stuffy or of constricted airways. He likes that he can already tell a difference. I think it'll help him during sports and play as well being able to get more air to his lungs easier. Here's to better sleep and less colds!
